The story
Llywelyn the Great came home from hunting. His hound Gelert ran out to meet him with blood around his mouth. Inside, the baby's cradle was overturned and the child was gone.
Llywelyn ran his sword through the dog.
Then he heard crying. The baby was alive underneath the cradle, unhurt — and beside it lay a dead wolf.
The village of Beddgelert in Snowdonia is named for the hound's grave, and you can still walk to the stone. The uncomfortable part: the grave was almost certainly invented around 1800 by a local innkeeper who understood exactly what a good story does to tourism. Steell painted it anyway, eighty years later, and painted it well enough that it stopped mattering.
